Notes for John Winnard |
Sponsors at his baptism were Christopher Mother and Helen Whittle.
I found three entries of marriage for John Winnard. One to Betty Hollywell on 21/4/1810, the second to Mary Shepherd on 26/11/1812, the third to Mary Mather, daughter of John and Anne Mather of Ashton. Did Betty die, or are these two different Johns? They could be cousins? See below for more info on the two Mary's.
By the time of the 1841 census John was living with just his son Ralph at Patrick's Row. Was the first Mary already dead, or just away that night? Their occupations were given as Weaver and Cordswainer.
By the time of the 1851 census they had moved to 67 Little London. John is 62 and his occupation given as Hand Loom Weaver. Mary is present now, but her age given as 48. This therefore means either (a) the age given is wrong (it would have meant marrying at age 9 and having her first child at age 13) or (b) this is John's third wife, who is also named Mary. I've no idea which so I'll assume the third marriage entry for John Winnard to another Mary is correct. Also living with them are their son John, 35, a Hand Loom Weaver, John's brother Thomas, 54, a Clock maker, and a lodger, Alice Brown, 36, also a Hand Loom Weaver. She was from Goldbourne.
By the time of the 1861 census John is a widower again and living at 12 Little London with his 46 year old son John. |
Notes for Mary (Spouse 1) |
Mary doesn't appear on the 1841 census. Was she already dead, or away that night? See comments on 1851 census for John for more details. |
