Notes for Robert St Clare
On the 1841 census Robert's occupation is given as Fireman and his age 20 and is still living with his parents at Rand Street, Wigan.

By the time of the 1851 census he was 36. He was still a Fireman, but this time it's a bit more specific, now he's in a factory, married with children, one of whom is 12 years old and has his own home at 45 Wigan Lane. This is slightly confusing. If his daughter is 12 years old, she would have been 2 at the last census, unless of course she was born out of wedlock, in which case she may well have been living with her mother under her mother's maiden name. James isn't present so presumably he had died.

On the 1861 census All the family is present but Ellen is missing, presumably dead given her age. Also present is Walter Winnard. Alice is the only one of the girls old enough so I have assumed she is the mother. Robert gives his occupation as Engine Server. The family now lived at 1 Gravel Hole, Wigan Lane.

By the time of the 1871 census Robert is living at 235 Mearsdens House, Pemberton. Robert, now 54, is living with his daughters Margaret, 19, and Elizabeth, 10. He gives his occupation as Engine Driver in a Cotton Factory, Margaret gives hers as Domestic Servant. See also the entry for his wife for this date.

The only record I have seen for Alice, Sarah and James is the 1851 census return.
Notes for Margaret (Spouse 1)
By 1871 Margaret is a widow living at 1 Gravel Hole, Wigan Lane. Still living with her are Elizabeth, Damask Weaver, Robert, Drawer in a Coal Pit, Jane, Domestic Servant, and Thomas, a Scholar. However, Robert is living elsewhere with two of their daughters. Does this mean they had seperated? I am sure I have the right people because the places of birth and occupations tally, as do their ages and the ages and names of the children living with them, so maybe she wasn't a widow, just a bit miffed. Or then again it could be an entry for a different Margaret Sinclair of the same age, with the same children, all of the right age?
