| Notes for Elizabeth Maley |
| On the 1851 census Elizabeth's occupation is given as Clogger's Wife. |
| Notes for Richard (Spouse 1) |
Sponsors at Richard's Baptism were Nicholas and Helen Atherton.
By the time of the 1851 census Richard and family were living at 32 St Mary's Chapel Yard, Standishgate. Richard's age is given as 32 and his occupation as Clogger Journeyman. Living with them were his widowed father, John, now aged 70. His occupation is given as Retired Weaver and his place of birth as Holland. Presumably this means Upholland. I don't think he was Dutch! Richard's brothers Thomas and William were also living there. Also living with the family was Johannah Berry, 20, from Ireland. Her occupation is given as School Miss Help.
By the time the 1861 census came around the family had moved again, to 79 Wigan Lane. Richard now says he was born in Wigan and his occupation was Master Clogger and Shoemaker. John isn't present. Also living with the family was Thomas Whalin, 16 of Liverpool. His occupation is given as Apprentice Clogger and Shoemaker.
In the same burial plot as Richard and Elizabeth are their widowed daughter and son John, d 12/10/1924 aged 52 and his widow Elizabeth d 6/2/1960 aged 81. This would put Richard's year of birth as 1872, when Elizabeth was 55. She died in 1872. Was Richard the reason? It's rather late to be having a child now, let alone back then, and Richard is substantially younger than all his brothers and sisters. |
