| Notes for John Rigby | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| By the time of the 1841 census John and family were living at Little London, Wigan. John's age is given as 55 and his occupation as Weaver. Living there at the time were John, Julia, Ellen, Ann Thomas and William, along with Elizabeth Catterall, aged 85, described as a lodger. By 1851 John is a widower and living with his son Thomas. John dies at home on 30/12/1855. His age is given as 75 (see below) and his occupation given as Hand Loom Cotton Weaver. The cause of death is given as Natural Decay and the death was registered buy his son Richard the following day. The registrar was Robert Halliwell. John's ages on the 1851 and 1861 census returns and on the register of burial would suggest he was born in 1780, rather than 1790. This means he either forgot how old he was or I need to check my data, or the dates in the register are wrong. On 10/11/1804 John and Juliana were sponsors at the baptism of John Heat, son of Robert and Mary. 14 seems a bit young to become a godfather so maybe John was born in 1780? | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Notes for Juliana (Spouse 1) | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Sponsors at her baptism were Richard Whittle and Elizabeth Catterall. Of all the Church records featuring Juliana only three I have found call her Julia. Was her name Julia and Juliana just the Latinised spelling? Several of the Church records were in Latin, so I'm glad I can still remember some of what I learned at school all those years ago. So it wasn't a waste of time after all! On the 1841 census Julia's age is given as 50 and her occupation as Winder. In the register of burial her abode is given as Little London, Wigan and she's called Julia. Julias died at home, at Little London, on 21st November 1849 at 8:30 pm. Her age is given as 63, her occupation Wife of John Rigby, Weaver, and the cause of death Asthma Several Years. Her death was registered by her son Richard the following day and the registrar was Robert Halliwell. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
