Notes for George Crook
George's birth was registered on 15th April 1853, almost 6 months after his birth, by his mother, by which time the family was living at Moor Lane, Kirkham. The registrar was Thomas Butcher and the superintendant was Robert Thompson.

At the time of the 1881 census the family lived at 25A Elbow Lane, Wigan. George was a Carpenter, Hannah was a Cotton Factory Operative. Living with them was a lodger, Ellen Leyland, a Cotton Factory Operative, like Hannah.

George died on 2nd April 1903 at 5 Scholefield Lane aged 50 of Pneumonia syncope, certified by F Rees M.D. His occupation is given as Colliery Carpenter. His death was registered by his son John, of 28 Victoria Avenue, Wigan on 3rd April. The registrar was Robert Halliwell.

George and Elizabeth are burried together in Wigan cemetery, along with the first two wives of their grandson George Joseph and a Hannah Schofield. Who was she? She was buried 29/06/1917 aged 74.
Notes for Elizabeth (Spouse 1)
Sponsors at Elizabeth's baptism were John Ashton and Mary Green.

Elizabeth's birth, at Elbow Lane, Millgate, was registered by her father, a Tailer, on 27th March, the registrar being Robert Halliwell.

On the 1871 census Elizabeth and her daughter Hannah are living in what I presume is a lodging house at 9 Elbow Lane Flats. Elizabeth gives her occupation as Scholar. Also living in the house are Thomas (34), Ann (28), Peter (6), Alice (3) and William (1) Schofield.

Elizabeth died at home at 2 Orchard Street on 4th February 1901 of Morbus Cordis Syncope, certified by F Rees M.D. Her occupation was given as wife of George Crook, a Colliery Carpenter, and registered by George, her widower, on the same day. The registrar was Robert Halliwell.

Buried with Elizabeth and George is Hannah Schofield, aged 74 when she was buried on 29th June 1917. Is this the Ann she was living with way back then, 46 years earlier? It seems unlikely that they would bury a stranger, or even a friend, in a family burial plot. Could Ann/Hannah have been Elizabeth's sister? Elizabeth did name her daughter Hannah, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility.
Notes for George & Elizabeth (Family)
George and Elizabeth married at St Mary's RC Chapel in Wigan. George was a Carpenter and Elizabeth a Tailoress. Their father's, Hugh and John, are described as Carpenter and Tailor respectively. The marriage was witnessed by James Crook and Mary Jolley and the presiding priest was William Honoran (I think but the writing on the original is a little dicey. The registrar was James Jolley. Any relation?
